Being a businesswoman and a mom is like walking on a tightrope while holding buckets of water, and trying to keep water from spilling out as you make your way across. This month we want to give Kudos to someone who walks that rope amazingly, the inspiring entrepreneur and mom, Sara Blakely.
Sara Blakely, the owner of Spanx, is a self-made woman billionaire and the awesome mom to four cute little ones. All her children are under the age of nine, so to say she is a busy mama is definitely an understatement.
Sara’s company is self-funded, and she still owns 100 percent of her business. Besides having donated a lot of money to organizations that help women, she also started Leg Up, which offers help to other female entrepreneurs to grow their business. Participants get one-on-one mentoring with Sara, as well as free advertising in the Spanx catalog. We love that she wants other moms and women entrepreneurs to be successful businesswomen too. Did we mention that in 2013, she signed The Giving Pledge along with Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, promising to donate at least half of her wealth to charity?
“My hat comes off like you cannot believe for mothers that start their entrepreneurial journey as mothers.”
-Sara Blakely, in an interview with Poppy Harlow for CNN.
We also love that even though she is a billionaire, she still shops at Target and gets “mom brain” just like the rest of us. She recently went on vacation to Florida and completely forgot to pack swimsuits for the family. She posts, “On vacation and had to make a @target run. Forgot to pack a few items… um like bathing suits and we are in FL. Anyway, the first thing I see in the store is this shirt, and couldn’t help but think…. messy bun and all. ?? #GettinItDone #MessyBun #TargetRun #Mom #Life#NoYouCantHaveThatToy ?” We can totally relate to this mom moment and have had a few of them ourselves!
Sara wants to raise kids who aren’t afraid to try something and fail. We love this motto. At Kudo Banz, we also believe in imparting the confidence that trying your best and to keep going despite failures is super important for a child’s growth and future. According to Sara, on a feature on the Today’s Show, “One of the parenting things I think is so important is not praising the child, but praising the effort.” She wants her kids to take risks in their life and not be afraid to try something new.

We love that Sara Blakely is a combination of real mom, strong woman and successful entrepreneur. It is so cool to see a fellow mom chasing her dreams while also raising the kids. Stay tuned next month for another feature on an awesome mom we want to give kudos to!
